Why symptoms show up inside the house

Warm air rises. In a house on a crawl space, up to half the air you breathe on the first floor came up from under the floor. That is called the stack effect. So a musty smell, humidity or allergy symptoms in the living room often start in the crawl space.

Charlotte makes it worse. Summer humidity above 70% flows in through open vents. Clay soil holds water after storms. Bare dirt gives off vapor all year. Older homes in neighborhoods like Dilworth, Plaza Midwood and downtown Gastonia often have no vapor barrier at all.

What to do next

  1. Take a flashlight and look through the access door. Note water, white or dark growth on wood, and sagging insulation.
  2. Put a cheap hygrometer in the crawl space for a day. Above 60% is a problem.
