Why not a $250 store dehumidifier?
Household units are built for a warm room. In a crawl space they ice up in cool weather, the bucket fills in hours, and they burn out in a year or two. Crawl space units are built to run low, cold and dirty. They drain by gravity or a small pump and run for years with a filter change twice a year.
How to size it
Sizing is by crawl space square footage and how wet it is.
- Up to 1,500 sq ft, sealed and dry: 70 pint unit
- Up to 2,500 sq ft, or damp: 90 to 100 pint unit
- Over 2,500 sq ft, or very wet: 120 pint unit or two units
Bigger is not always better. An oversized unit cycles on and off and wears faster. A specialist will size it after measuring the space.
What installation includes
- Mounting the unit off the floor, hung from joists or on a stand
- A drain line to the outside, a sump, or a condensate pump
- A dedicated outlet or hard wiring
- A humidistat set to about 50%
- Ducting to spread air if the crawl space has separate sections
In a vented crawl space it will lose
A dehumidifier in a crawl space with open vents is trying to dry the whole outdoors. It runs all day, costs more in power, and still cannot hold 50% in July. Seal the vents at the same time.
